Tackling Gendered Violence Transnationally (2022–2023)
This project focuses on a transnational, co-produced research and impact initiative aimed at addressing gender-based violence across Brazil and the United Kingdom.
Building on earlier research on violence against women and girls (VAWG) in Rio de Janeiro and among Brazilian migrants in London, the project moves beyond mapping violence to fostering knowledge exchange, raising awareness, and supporting prevention through collaboration with civil society organisations, researchers, and policymakers.
Delivered in partnership with organisations including Migrants in Action (MinA), the Latin American Women’s Rights Service (LAWRS), and Redes da Maré, the project developed a series of participatory and arts-based activities to explore women’s lived experiences, strengthen support networks, and generate policy-relevant insights.
A key strand of the project focused on photovoice methodologies to examine the role of financial autonomy, work, and everyday experiences in shaping women’s vulnerability to and resistance against gender-based violence. Within this strand, the project Who’s Behind Your Order? emerged as a creative output exploring the experiences of Brazilian migrant women working in the app-based delivery sector in London.
Research Methods:
- Participatory and co-produced research, including photovoice, arts-based workshops, data analysis of service user experiences, and international knowledge exchange activities between two leading grassroots organisations (LAWRS and Redes da Maré)
- The project combined creative methodologies with policy engagement, including exhibitions, workshops, and roundtables across London and Rio de Janeiro
Key Objectives
Strengthen transnational knowledge exchange between Brazil and the UK on gender-based violence
Raise awareness of the structural drivers and impacts of violence against women
Explore the role of financial autonomy and labour in preventing and shaping experiences of violence
Support collaboration between researchers, grassroots organisations, and policymakers
Generate evidence and creative outputs to inform policy and advocacy
Key Findings
Gender-based violence is widespread yet often underreported due to fear, stigma, and structural barriers
Financial autonomy plays a complex role, acting both as a pathway to independence and as a site of new vulnerabilities
Structural inequalities, including migration status, race, and labour precarity, shape women’s experiences of violence
Creative and participatory approaches are effective in raising awareness and amplifying lived experiences
Transnational collaboration strengthens knowledge exchange and supports more holistic responses to violence
Civil society organisations play a critical role in prevention, support, and advocacy
